Craftsmanship Matters

Basements done right start with what you cannot see.

Basements in Iowa deal with conditions that the rest of the house does not: moisture migration through concrete, hydrostatic pressure, humidity swings between seasons, and limited natural light and ventilation. A basement finish that ignores these factors might look good on day one, but problems with mold, musty smells, and material failure will follow.

Tyler's Renovations addresses the below-grade environment before the framing goes up. We assess moisture levels, install vapor barriers and waterproofing where needed, plan for proper insulation and ventilation, and design the layout around your existing mechanicals.

Moisture first, finish second

We do not frame over wet concrete. Every basement project starts with a thorough moisture assessment and any necessary remediation before a single stud goes up.

Moisture Control
Waterproofing, vapor barriers, and sump pump work handled before framing begins.
Proper Ventilation
HVAC extensions and duct runs to keep the space comfortable year-round.
Code Compliance
Egress windows, smoke detectors, and electrical to meet Iowa building requirements.

What We Do

From bare concrete to fully finished living space, we handle every phase of basement remodeling in the Des Moines area.

Full Basement Finishing

A full basement finish transforms an unfinished concrete space into usable living area. We handle every phase: moisture assessment, waterproofing, framing, insulation, electrical rough-in, HVAC duct extensions, drywall, flooring, paint, and trim. The layout is designed around your existing mechanicals so the finished space works efficiently without boxing in anything that needs future access.

  • Framing, insulation, and drywall
  • Flooring installation (LVP, carpet, tile)
  • Ceiling options (drywall or drop ceiling)
  • Interior painting and trim work
  • Built-in storage solutions

Basement Bedrooms & Egress Windows

Adding a bedroom to your basement requires an egress window that meets Iowa building code for emergency exit. We handle the full scope: cutting the foundation wall, installing the window well and egress window, waterproofing the opening, and finishing the bedroom with proper framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, lighting, and closet space.

  • Egress window cutting and installation
  • Window well and drainage
  • Bedroom framing and finishing
  • Closet buildouts
  • Lighting and electrical

Basement Bathroom Additions

A basement bathroom adds convenience and value, but it also involves plumbing work that is unique to below-grade spaces. We handle the plumbing rough-in, including drain lines and sewage ejector systems where needed, along with waterproofing, tile, fixtures, and finishes.

  • Full bathroom and half bath builds
  • Plumbing rough-in and drain lines
  • Sewage ejector pump installation
  • Shower and tub installation
  • Tile, vanity, and fixture work

Wet Bars & Kitchenettes

A wet bar or kitchenette turns your basement into a self-contained entertaining or living space. We handle the plumbing for a sink, the electrical for a mini fridge or small appliances, cabinetry, countertops, and backsplash. The scope ranges from a simple bar area with a sink and undercounter fridge to a full kitchenette with storage, prep space, and seating.

  • Wet bar builds with sink and plumbing
  • Kitchenette design and construction
  • Cabinetry and countertop installation
  • Electrical for appliances and lighting
  • Backsplash and finishing details

Home Offices, Media Rooms & Specialty Spaces

Basements are well suited for dedicated-use rooms that benefit from separation from the rest of the house. A home office gives you a quiet workspace. A media room takes advantage of the naturally dark, enclosed environment. A workout room avoids the noise and vibration issues you would deal with on an upper floor. We design and build these spaces with the right lighting, electrical, soundproofing, and climate control for their intended use.

  • Home office buildouts with dedicated electrical and lighting
  • Home theater and media room construction
  • Workout and gym spaces
  • Playrooms and recreation rooms
  • Soundproofing and acoustic treatment where needed

Waterproofing & Moisture Mitigation

Moisture is the number one concern in Iowa basements. Before any finishing work begins, we assess the current moisture conditions and address them. This might mean installing or upgrading a sump pump, adding interior drain tile, applying vapor barriers to concrete walls and floors, or sealing cracks in the foundation. We do not frame over wet walls.

  • Sump pump installation and upgrades
  • Interior drain tile systems
  • Vapor barrier installation
  • Foundation crack sealing
  • Moisture testing and assessment

Electrical & HVAC

A finished basement needs proper lighting, electrical outlets, and climate control to be comfortable and functional. We handle the electrical rough-in for recessed lighting, switched outlets, dedicated circuits, and smoke/CO detector placement. On the HVAC side, we extend duct runs, add supply and return vents, and ensure the basement is tied into your existing system.

  • Recessed lighting and switched circuits
  • Outlet and switch placement
  • Dedicated circuits for specialty rooms
  • HVAC duct extensions and vent runs
  • Smoke and CO detector installation

Planning Your Basement Remodel

Basement projects have unique challenges that above-grade rooms do not. Moisture, mechanicals, ceiling height, egress requirements, and HVAC routing all need to be planned around. Here is how we keep the project organized:

01

Assessment

We inspect for moisture, check ceiling height clearances, evaluate the foundation, and map out existing mechanicals (furnace, water heater, electrical panel, sump pit, ductwork).

02

Design & Layout

We plan the room layout around your goals and existing infrastructure, designing a floor plan that makes the best use of available square footage while keeping mechanicals accessible.

03

Moisture Remediation

If there are any moisture issues, we address them before framing. Sump pump work, drain tile, vapor barriers, or crack sealing — the concrete is dry before we build.

04

Build Sequence

Framing and insulation first, then electrical and HVAC rough-in, then drywall, flooring, paint, trim, and fixtures. We protect the rest of your home throughout.

05

Final Walkthrough

We go through the finished space with you to make sure every detail meets your expectations before the project is complete.

Common Questions

How long does it take to finish a basement?
For a standard full basement finish (framing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, flooring, paint, and trim), the typical timeline is 4 to 8 weeks. Larger projects that include a bathroom addition, egress window, wet bar, or significant waterproofing work may take longer. We provide a detailed schedule with every estimate.
My basement has had water in the past. Can you still finish it?
Yes, but the water issue needs to be addressed first. We assess where the moisture is coming from and resolve it before any framing or finishing work begins. Solutions may include sump pump installation or upgrade, interior drain tile, vapor barriers, or foundation crack repair. We do not finish over wet concrete or damp walls.
Do I need an egress window to add a bedroom in the basement?
Yes. Iowa building code requires an egress window in any basement room used as a bedroom. The window must meet specific size requirements for emergency escape. We handle the full installation, including cutting the foundation wall, setting the window, installing the window well with drainage, and waterproofing the opening.
Can you work around my furnace, water heater, and other mechanicals?
Absolutely. Every basement has mechanicals that need to remain accessible. We design the layout to work around your furnace, water heater, electrical panel, and sump pit, and we use access panels or closet enclosures so service technicians can reach everything when needed.
Do you handle the electrical and HVAC, or do I need to hire separate contractors?
We handle it all in-house. Electrical rough-in (recessed lighting, outlets, dedicated circuits, smoke detectors) and HVAC work (duct extensions, supply and return vents) are part of our standard basement finishing scope. You do not need to coordinate separate contractors.
What flooring is best for a basement?
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is the most popular choice for Iowa basements because it is 100% waterproof, durable, and comfortable underfoot. Carpet is a good option for bedrooms and media rooms if the basement is dry and well-controlled. Tile works well in bathrooms and wet bar areas. We help you choose the right material for each room based on how you plan to use the space.
Can you add a bathroom to my basement?
Yes. Basement bathroom additions are a regular part of our work. We handle the plumbing rough-in, including drain lines and sewage ejector pumps where needed, along with all the finishing work: tile, fixtures, vanity, and paint.
Will a finished basement add value to my home?
In most cases, yes. A well-finished basement adds usable living square footage, which increases the functional value and appeal of the home. The exact return depends on the quality of the finish, the features included, and the local market. A finished basement with a bathroom and egress-compliant bedroom adds the most value.
Do you offer financing for basement remodels?
Yes. We offer flexible financing options through Hearth, including promotional 0% interest plans for qualified homeowners. You can check your options without affecting your credit score.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Tyler's Renovations LLC is fully licensed and insured. We carry liability insurance on every project for your protection and peace of mind.
